Dear reader,
This week we bring to you a dispatch from the bustling lanes of Ejipura, a hub of Northeastern migrants in the heart of Bengaluru.
Apart from many friendly faces from home, Ejipura has a proliferation of quintessentially “Northeast” shops, selling produce from the region, including fresh vegetables, fish, and dry ingredients, sourced from the seven sisters states.
These shops, apart from marking a sense of place and belonging for these young boys and girls, also signal the rise of entrepreneurial spirt — a crucial, recent development in the migrant journey.
As a young shop owner from Manipur says: “I am so far away in a city that feels nothing like home. But the minute I step into my shop, I get reminded of home.”
From Mizoram
Amid the continuing violence and turmoil in neighbouring Myanmar, at least 15 persons, including at least four Myanmarese policemen, have crossed over into Mizoram over the last few day
While the Centre is yet to issue instructions, the Mizos are in a fix as to how to deal with the new entrants — Champai shares a porous border with Chin State of Myanmar, and the Mizo and Chin communities share ethnic roots.
Assam Elections
As the dates draw closer, campaigning picks up speed in Assam.
Priyanka Gandhi’s visit to Assam grabbed many eyeballs, as the Congress leader joined labourers in a tea garden and started picking the leaves. In this explainer, we highlight the importance of the tea garden community in Assam elections. Another shot in the arm for Congress is the joining of Bodoland People’s Front, a former BJP ally. Read why here.
Also, read about Congress’s tryst with social media, modelled on the Chattisgarh plan.
But what really ruffled feathers in Assam this week was a letter from jailed peasant leader Akhil Gogoi. Read more in our explainer here.
Until next week,
Tora Agawala
