Dear reader,

Israel and Palestine have finally agreed to a ceasefire after 11 days of violent confrontations leaving more than 240 people dead. The core issue here, like in every conflict between Israel and Palestine in the past, is that of Jerusalem.

The city is of religious significance to three religions — Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The sanctity that each of these religions associate with Jerusalem is validated through mythical or historical episodes that may or not be factually accurate.

Nonetheless, these historical claims have time and again given rise to political disputes. As Professor Simon Golhill notes in his book, “The intensity of feeling that Jerusalem provokes is intimately tied to the claim that ‘this is the very place where…’.”

Our story from 2017 provides an in-depth analysis of the claims that each of the three religions uphold to call Jerusalem their holy city. This other story from our explained section, published in 2018, digs into the political contest over Jerusalem since the 1947 declaration to partition Palestine between Jewish and Arab states.

Read here the story: Jerusalem: A tale of three cities…one Jewish, one Christian and one Muslim

Sincerely,

Adrija Roychowdhury
