A number of landmark buildings in New Delhi will soon be demolished to make way for a revamped Central Vista and a new Parliamentary complex. These include the National Museum, the annexe of the National Archives, the Vigyan Bhawan, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) among others. Built in the post-Independence era, these structures represent the aspirations of a young nation newly freed from colonial forces.
Our story this week digs into the history of these structures. We spoke to historians of art and architecture and studied academic literature on post-Independence architecture of New Delhi to understand the political statements made by these structures. Most think it is unfortunate that despite the historical significance of this period, the buildings designed at the time are not considered heritage, and consequently not given the protection they deserve.
