In Tripura, there is a massive uproar over the behavior of a District Magistrate - seen disrupting two wedding ceremonies in Agartala on April 26. After the video showing DM Shailesh Kumar Yadav went viral, there was widespread uproar from across the country.
While the officer sought to apologise in the face of rising public reaction, he took a u-turn days later, when he appeared before an inquiry committee set up to probe the incident. “I did what I did to maintain law and order and prevent the spread of Covid-19. I stand by my actions,” he said, sparking another series of protests. Read more here.
On the pandemic front, Assam has extended night curfew till May 1, along with Tripura which has extended night curfew orders for the next month. Three persons, including a constable of Assam Police Battalion (APBn), were arrested for their alleged role in aiding the banned United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in the abduction of three employees of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) from Assam’s Sivasagar district on April 21. They were claimed to have been associated with the outlawed insurgent outfit in several other cases. Read more here.
Meanwhile, after raging for over 30 hours, the Mizoram forest fire spread to towns, gutting homes. The Indian Air Force (IAF) was called in, requisitioned by the Mizoram government and two Mi-17V5 helicopters were deployed, equipped with Bambi Buckets, to control the fire.
In the end, don’t miss out on how Manipur Police on Friday recovered as many as 34 hand grenades following the arrest of three cadres of a banned militant outfit at Thoubal district. The weapons were meant to carry out “prejudicial activities”, including extortion, to raise funds for the outfit, the police said.
