Dear reader,

The union territory of Lakshadweep has been making news in the past few weeks. Administrator Praful Patel has made a list of controversial proposals which he says are aimed at making the islands a safe and ideal tourist hub. Residents though believe that the regulations would strip Lakshadweep of its unique socio-cultural fabric. Our story this week unravels the history and society in this isolated group of islands lying off the coast of Kerala.

Though inhabited by a majority of Muslim residents, Islam practised in the Lakshadweep is unlike anything elsewhere in the country. It is a matrilineal Islamic society that is also influenced by Hindu traditions and caste structure. Further, the islanders share linguistic and ethnic ties with Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka as well as the Arabic speaking part of the world.

Read here the story: Lakshadweep: An isolated island that became a melting pot of cultures

Sincerely,

Adrija Roychowdhury
