Dear reader, Like the rest of the country, the northeastern states too, has been struggling to vaccinate. However, in what appears to be an overall dismal picture, a few bright spots have emerged. Take for example, the state of Tripura, which has now vaccinated around 80 percent of people across age groups. Or, this village in Manipur’s Kamjong district that has achieved administering one dose to almost 95 per cent of its 45+ population. Or, this district in Arunachal Pradesh, which exceeded its set target. What has led to these happy anomalies? Well, reasons range from vaccination competitions to earnest social workers. But most of all, it's motivation. “Everyone has to get a shot, so we will go anywhere to administer it, even if it involves going on a JCB” The above was said by 25-year-old healthcare worker, Takio Jully who rode a JCB excavator to reach a remote village on the Myanmar border to vaccinate its population. From Tripura In news that has now almost become disturbingly routine in Tripura, three men suspected of ‘smuggling’ cattle were allegedly lynched in the state’s Khowai district on Sunday. While the cops have zeroed in on suspects, we decided to look at why cattle smuggling is such a big issue in Tripura In wildlife news In an incident which drew the ire of wildlife activists in Assam, more than 200 cattle egrets died on Thursday when the trees they were nesting in were chopped off by the local municipality. What’s curious is that the deaths were linked to a spread of Covid-19. This is what went down. From our Explained section When Ziona Chana, famous as the patriarch of the ‘world’s largest family’, died in Mizoram earlier this month, a flurry of headlines followed. For years, Ziona’s incredible story — featuring his 38 wives, 89 children and 36 grandchildren — has fascinated the world, drawing tourists and journalists to his four-storey purple home in a Mizoram village. In this explainer, we go beyond Ziona’s polygamous nature and look at the little-known religious sect he led. Finally… We look at curator and conservationist L Somi Roy’s latest offering — a children’s book that dives into the myths recorded for generations in Manipur’s ancient manuscript tradition. Read here. Until next week, Tora Agarwala |
