As Afghanistan continues to struggle with the unexpectedly swift take over by the Taliban, much remains to be understood about the complicated history of the region that has led to the current political chaos. Our story this week looks at a brief but significant chapter in Afghanistan’s history, that of communism. The roots of communism in Afghanistan is traced back to the mid 1960s and till the fall of the People’s Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government in 1992, it shaped the political trajectory of Kabul and was a catalyst for the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.
Mira Patel’s story on the communist history of Afghanistan reflects over why this period of the country’s history was crucial to the rise of the Taliban in the 1990s. The rise of the Taliban can be explained by the missteps taken by the PDPA and the horrors inflicted by the occupying Soviet forces.
