Explained Editor’s note | A nationwide health ID, ethnic violence in Assam, and a 🏠 buying tip

Dear Express Explained reader,

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission was launched this week, with the promise of creating a unique health ID for every Indian, as well as a comprehensive digital registry of healthcare professionals and facilities across the country. Kaunain Sheriff M wrote on the process of how you can go about getting the ID, how it can potentially revolutionise healthcare in India and, inevitably, the concerns that have been raised in certain quarters about the security of your personal health data.

A very disturbing video surfaced on social media last week, showing a man being shot by security forces in Assam, followed by a crazed civilian stomping on his motionless form lying flat on the ground. Tora Agarwala, who did some outstanding reporting on the story from Sipajhar in Darrang district, wrote about the ethnic conflict over land in Assam going back several decades, its roots, tensions, and victims.

On October 1, the Ordnance Factory Board, the first of whose 41 establishments across the country was set up in Cossipore, Calcutta, in 1801, ceased to exist — and the assets, staff, and operations of its ordnance factories and related units across the country were transferred to seven defence public sector units as part of a ‘corporatisation’ exercise. Sushant Kulkarni who had been covering this story closely as it developed, wrote an explainer on why and how this exercise came about, and what lies ahead for protesting workers and other stakeholders.

Over the last month or so, lenders have announced significant cuts in their home loan rates, builders have been offering discounts on new properties, and there are unmistakable signs of a pick-up in demand. Does this indicate that the long slump in real estate may at last have started to move closer to its end? Sandeep Singh who writes or curates the ‘Your Money’ column that appears every Friday in the print edition of The Indian Express Explained, wrote, along with Sunny Verma, why this may be the right time for you to buy a home.

Stay safe and stay aware. Keep reading The Indian Express Explained.

Sincerely,

Monojit
