Director Shoojit Sircar’s new film, ‘Sardar Udham’, starring Vicky Kaushal releases this weekend. The film is based on the life and nationalist struggle of Udham Singh. A survivor of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Singh had resolved to avenge the madness of General Dyer as he fired upon hundreds of innocent, unarmed lives. Two decades later, he fulfilled his promise as he shot Michael O’ Dwyer at a meeting in Caxton Hall, London. O’Dwyer was the lieutenant governor of Punjab when the Jallianwala Bagh incident had happened.
Our story this week takes a close look at the personality and life of Udham Singh. It also goes into the details of how he plotted the murder of O’Dwyer, how the British government, the press both in Britaina and India, as well as nationalist leaders like Gandhi and Nehru reacted to the assassination. Interestingly, apart from earning the wrath of the British authorities, leaders in India too were largely critical of Singh’s actions. His fight for independence lay forgotten and buried for several decades after he was hanged to death at Pentonville prison in 1940.
