Dear reader,   There is an interesting relationship between gender equality and easy access to toilets. A 2017 study by ActionAid India showed that 35 per cent of the 229 toilets surveyed in Delhi did not have a separate section for women. Globally as well, the issue of toilet access has a special place in the feminist movement. Even though there has been some progress made in the past few decades, the topic remains worthy of discussion given the ramifications that unequal access to toilets have.   This week Mira Patel visited a slum in Mumbai’s Fort commercial district about the issues faced by them with regard to toilet access. She then spoke to legal, architectural and gender experts from across the world to understand why access to toilets is a key factor deciding the social and economic development of women.
