Thirty-three years back on November 3, 1988 a group of Maldivians assisted by a Sri Lankan militant organisation attempted to overthrow the government of Maldives. India’s military assistance was sought and Operation Cactus commenced, which was successful in suppressing the coup. More than three decades later, Operation Cactus has not been forgotten by the people of Maldives.
In our story this week, Neha Banka spoke to the people in the Maldives and in the Indian Armed Forces to put together an hour by hour and day by day account of how the coup and the subsequent operation unfolded. What had happened in the Maldives had shaken the country. In its modern history, an attack like this on the small island nation had never occurred before. The role played by India comes up over and again in discussions on bilateral relations between the two countries.
