Earlier this month, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) passed a ‘historical resolution’ at the closing ceremony of the sixth plenary session of the central committee that will secure President Xi Jinping’s political leadership in the country for the foreseeable future. In 2018, China dropped the two-term limit on presidency. Xi has also thus far failed to nominate a successor, which previous leaders typically do at the start of their second term. He looks increasingly likely to win a third term during the 2022 Chinese elections and could potentially retain power for the rest of his life. China’s last leader for life was Mao Zedong.
Did you know that Britain today has over 40 members in the House of Commons and the House of Lords from the South Asian community. A new book, written by Professor Arup Chatterjee, reflects on this staggering presence of Indians in the British political scene by tracing the history of the community in London five and a half centuries back when the English East India Company had just taken birth. Our other story this week is an interview with Chatterjee, wherein he details the many ways in which the Indian community was responsible for building London, the way we know the city today, as well as how the city in turn shaped the nationalist movement in India.
