The Odisha government announced recently that it would be investing Rs 650 crore in Rourkela as part of the state’s preparations to host the Hockey 2023 World Cup. A significant portion of this amount will go into building the city’s infrastructure. Experience of mega sporting events in cities across the world shows that huge infrastructure development investments are almost always part of the groundwork. This was true even in the case of the Asian Games held in 1982 and the Commonwealth Games held in 2010 in New Delhi. But do the preparations involved in hosting a major sporting tournament have the desired effects on a hosting city?
This week’s story by Mira Patel explores this question. While some reports would suggest that the short and long term benefits of investments in hosting sports tournaments remains either very low or invisible, there are others who suggest that the net results are positive and include several intangible gains such as the public perception of development agencies.
