Dear Express Explained reader, The nation will celebrate its 73rd Republic Day in three days, and we published several explainers this week related to news around the event. Following the controversy over alleged political interference in the selection of the tableaux for Republic Day, Krishn Kaushik wrote on the process by which the selection is made. Krishn also wrote a backgrounder on the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, which, after burning for a half century, has now been "merged" with the flame at the National War Memorial not far away. The government has also announced that the space under the grand canopy at India Gate, which has remained vacant since George V was pushed off the pedestal, and which was for a time thought to have been ideal for a statue of the Father of the Nation, will soon be occupied by a freestanding granite sculpture of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the great patriot whose birth anniversary the nation is celebrating today. Divya A wrote on the site and the statue, and why the government may have chosen to put Netaji on the pedestal. I would also like to flag to you three other important explainers that we published this week, all around recent news stories. The Election Commission has taken the unusual - and major - step of postponing the Assembly elections in Punjab in order to accommodate the religious festival of Guru Ravidas Jayanti. Anju Agnihotri Chaba wrote about the Ravidassias of Punjab, and why the community's biggest hub in the state, the Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar, carries such formidable political weight. States have protested a proposed move by the central government to amend the rules for central deputation for IAS officers. Shyamlal Yadav wrote on the rules that currently apply for central deputation, and how the proposed changes might give the Centre greater control over the process. The Delhi High Court is hearing a hugely significant challenge to the constitutional validity of the exception in India's rape law that allows a husband to have sexual intercourse with his wife against her will. Apurva Vishwanath summed up the issues in the debate over marital rape, and the arguments made before the court. Do read. Stay safe and stay aware. Keep reading The Indian Express Explained. A very happy Republic Day to all of you.
