Dear Express Explained reader, India Russia's war against Ukraine has overturned the breadbasket of Europe, and opened up an unexpected opportunity for farmers in India. The disruption of the Black Sea grain trade and the global economic sanctions against Russia have firmed up prices of not just wheat, but also corn, mustard, and barley. Indian exports of these commodities have risen, and further gains are expected later in the year. Harish Damodaran analysed the data and looked at the big picture on the impact of the war on Indian agri exports. While the West stands united against Russia and behind Ukraine in this war, India and its neighbours in South Asia have taken calibrated positions that reflect the history and potential of their relations with the great powers, and their assessment of the shifting sands of geopolitics. Nirupama Subramanian analysed the divide in South Asia between those who have chosen a neutral stance and those who have been unequivocal in their criticism of Moscow. Why did each of these countries take the line it did? Karnataka High Court this week upheld the restriction put by the state on Muslim women wearing hijab in educational institutions, ruling that the right to wear hijab is not protected by the Constitution. Apurva Vishwanath summarised the court's arguments on the four questions that it identified as central to the matter, and explained how the judgment raises issues for appeal. The theatre of the hijab protests, the coastal Karnataka district of Udupi, is among the state's best performing districts academically, which has traditionally scored high on learning indicators. Uma Vishnu, who had earlier travelled to Udupi to speak with students to understand their anxieties and their anger, wrote about the historical context in which the foundations of education were laid here - the fruit of the commitment of missionaries, banks, and some remarkable individuals.
