As the Russian invasion in Ukraine rages on, and major international players react with sanctions on Russia, a constant concern on everyone’s mind is the impact the conflict would have on the energy requirements of Europe and the world. Europe is Russia’s main market for energy exports and in turn its main source of revenue. Keeping in mind this relationship, western sanctions have until now largely bypassed Russia’s energy sector. However, what would be the scale of the impact if Russia was to cut off energy supply to the rest of Europe?
This week’s story by Mira Patel answers this question through a series of data infographics. As she notes in her article, about half of Russia’s crude oil produce is shipped to European countries. At the same time, Russia remains the largest source of natural gas for the European Union due to its abundant gas reserves and an extensive pipeline network. As the data shows, the hampering of the mutually beneficial relationship between Europe and Russia due to the ongoing crisis could have far reaching effects.
For our other story this week, Neha Banka dug into the history of a neighbourhood in South Kolkata, Bhawanipur, best known for carrying the residence of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. A recent book published by students of Bhawanipur College puts together the intriguing history of the neighbourhood through oral histories of the families living there. Nuggets of history that are often overlooked in the larger history of Kolkata have found mention here, like the role that the city’s community of lawyers have played for generations in building up Bhawanipur.
